In February 2025, a 10-year-old U.S. citizen undergoing treatment for brain cancer was deported to Mexico along with her undocumented parents and siblings while en route from Rio Grande City to Houston for an urgent medical appointment. Despite previously passing through immigration checkpoints using letters from doctors and lawyers, the family’s documentation was deemed insufficient during this trip. The parents, who had no criminal history, were given the choice to leave their children in U.S. government custody or take them to Mexico; they chose to keep the family together. Now in Mexico, the children are separated from their regular doctors, and the family fears for their safety, preventing the children from attending school.
